We at The Passed Note carry a perpetual crush for YA novels—as well as for the authors who pen them—so we gather every cherished petal of related news that we can find. This week we offer to you this lovely (and edgy) bouquet of some of our YA writer crushes and excerpts from their recent work, complete with a juicy Q&A with our favorite power couple.
Angie Thomas’ debut novel The Hate U Give is not due to hit shelves until February 2017—but fear not! You can read an excerpt from chapters one and two here. Smart, gritty, raw, and real, THUG’s protagonist Starr will steal your heart in the first paragraph.
And speaking of heartthrobs, check out this Q&A with our favorite YA couple, Tahereh Mafi and Ransom Riggs. From Tahereh’s wedding bouquet (made by hubby from book pages) to the absolutely brilliant strides they have each made in the YA world, we can’t get enough of the “Kids’ Lit Power Couple.”
Margaret Stohl’s Black Widow: Red Vengeance just hit shelves this week, and the superhero-loving nerd in us couldn’t be more excited! You can check out an excerpt here.
Education editor Liz Dwyer writes about closing the YA lit diversity gap in this article for TakePart. She discusses how the partnership between the National Education Association Foundation and Lee & Low Books, as well as the nonprofit First Book, “will provide thousands of diverse books to schools and students in low-income communities . . . to ensure that students have meaningful learning experiences with literature.”
Last but not least, after being in print for over a year, Jason Reynolds’ and Brendan Kiely’s All American Boys made the NYT Bestseller list. Congrats, guys!
Don’t forget to check out Issue 2, which comes out October 15!
