I always have a never ending list of books that I am anticipating, but these have been a few of my favorites this summer.
Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson has been one of my better reads lately. Elisabeth has grown up in the library learning how to properly care for books, and they do take some looking after. They have minds of their own and they will often bite and even occasionally turn into giant monsters seeking to destroy the library. The number one thing she has been taught is that magic is evil and sorcerers are dangerous. But when the headmistress of her library is killed, she will have no choice but to accept the help of a sorcerer and the demon who gives him his powers. This book is a fun ride which will make you proud to be a child of the library.
Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim was another highly anticipated release this summer, and not just by me. Maia dreams of being a tailor but is limited by her gender. When opportunity comes along, she cuts her hair and joins a competition to become the royal tailor. But when asked to sew a gown for the future empress from the laughter of the sun, tears of the moon, and the blood of stars she will go on a journey which will allow her to find so much more. A twist on the tale of Mulan, the first in this series is both moving and romantic.
Crown of Coral and Pearl by Mara Rutherford does not come out until August 27th, but it’s becoming one of my most anticipated releases for this summer. It sounds like it has all of the tropes that I’m a sucker for. Princes searching for their brides from among the common people. Our heroine thinking that her sister will be the chosen one because she herself is plain. Getting chosen herself and having to navigate the treachery of the royal court even though she was not brought up to do so. I mean, how can you go wrong?
